Walmer Crescent Association

The Association was established in 2004 to preserve and improve an outstanding Alexander Thomson crescent in Glasgow, and to enhance its conservation area and surroundings.

The Crescent was a property speculation built on open land in 1857 for one John Hood jr., a house factor & insurance agent. It was to be 'occupied exclusively by rich merchants'. The design is austere, with simple bosses around the doors and restrained shallow friezes carved around the upper window bays.

The Crescent was for a time a gated private road, and originally there was a 'pleasure garden' at the front, overbuilt in the early twentieth century with a parade of shops (see 1935 album).

A structural repair programme in the early 1980s was somewhat provisional, and a major restoration scheme is now proposed, the feasibility project for which will be commissioned from the firm of Simpson and Brown.
